This exhibition departs from Sla Cha’s game. The items in the game range from the music that fits three windows to Jaehwan Joo’s work, etc. The exhibition ends with Donghee Koo’s work Words that are Faster than Speech.

Abstract Cabinet is an exhibition space as well as a transmission system. It was created to explore the design of tangible and intangible spaces, exhibition layouts, and the abstract-ness of exhibition “viewing”. What is visible here are not documentation videos, but new video works produced specifically for an online exhibition. Abstract Cabinet intends to examine the feasibility and the variability in transfiguring art spaces and their regulations.
“Abstract Cabinet” is a title taken from El Lissitzky’s (1890-1941) 1927 work. El Lissitzky was commissioned to design the space for abstract art by the Landesmuseum in Hannover. He placed protruding strips on walls on which the colors of the walls change according to the viewing direction, and the hang of vertical artworks is interchangeable. The project was both an experiment and restriction--a temporary arrangement as well as preservation for durability. Lissitzky had once said that the canvas for him is an architectural site, and the viewer should be able to walk around it and implement constructive ideas.
The Abstract Cabinet you see now began with the question on exhibition structures. Each participating artist has produced an “exhibition/video” based on their work, archives, and conversations. For Sla Cha, their past exhibition becomes the motif in their “exhibition/video”, and for Jeuno JE Kim, the “exhibition/video” derives from their archival materials. Jaehwan Joo’s video is an interview of himself focused on his 2007 solo exhibition Under CCTV Surveillance, which departed from the idea of Dokkaebi (Korean goblin). The three songs that are each 6 minutes and 6 seconds long written by Young Gyu Jang during this summer act as the white screen or background. Donghee Koo utilizes the screen space to arrange the visualization of spoken and written words, the reality of sound, and the relationship between fragments and masses. Songhee Noh brings SMSM’s 10th anniversary retrospective online to accelerate the act of viewing and its route, and memory. In Noh’s video, one may think about why El Lissitzky’s architectural drawings on paper look like Sketch Up tools at a glance.
Abstract Cabinet uploads new works as a transmission system. The six heterogenous works have a few things in common other than the fact that they were all created by the end of 2020. First, their subject matter is “exhibition”. The works reference the act of exhibiting, exhibition viewing, exhibition traffic guideline, and the viewer’s sight and movement. Secondly, Abstract Cabinet is not a substitution A’ or a of the experience capital A, which had already existed somewhere. Abstract Cabinet tests exhibition structures and to what extent the enclosed space and time can exercise their faculties. How far can an “exhibition” as both subject and word change things?
